Neenah Wins 16-and-Under Junior Varsity Title; Rebels Third at
17-and-Under Tournament
Neenah rallied for five straight wins, including a
12-3 victory over Genoa City in the title game, to capture the Wisconsin
State American Legion junior varsity 16-and-under championship in
Wisconsin Rapids on Tues., July 30.
Earlier in the night, Neenah (29-10) beat Wisconsin Rapids
(40-7) 9-7
to reach the title game. Neenah had lost its first game of the tournament
to Genoa City (19-8) 11-7 on Friday before rallying for the title. With the win,
Neenah advances to the national 16-and-under tournament starting Thurs.,
August 1 at 7 p.m. in Terre Haute, Ind.
Matt Mancl's three-run double highlighted a six-run sixth inning
in the championship game that broke a 3-3 tie. Winning pitcher Brian Dexter
also added a solo home run during the inning. Andy Mankiewicz drove in
three runs and picked up the victory in relief during Neenah's semifinal win over Wisconsin Rapids.
In the 17-and-under tournament in Plover, the
Appleton Rebels placed third after losing to eventual state champion
Marshfield in the semifinals on Wed., July 31. Marshfield proceeded to
defeat Whitewater 2-1 in the championship game. Manitowoc finished fourth
in the tournament and Pulaski tied for seventh.
