New London and Appleton Rebels Clinch Division Titles 2005 League Playoff Information New London won its first-ever Fox River Valley American Legion League division title and the Appleton Rebels claimed their first pennant since 1999 with home victories on Wednesday, July 20. The teams will play each other for the National Conference title on Friday at 5 p.m. at Hatten Park in New London. The winner will play at either De Pere or Pulaski on Monday for the league championship. Both New London and the Rebels finished 11-3 in league play, but New London earned the right to host based on fewer runs allowed in all league games. New London tied with Waupaca for the West Division title, but beat Waupaca twice to earn the playoff spot. New London defeated Menasha 9-0 behind a three-hit shutout from Lance Poppy to finish off a week in which it needed to win three games against three of the West Division's top teams. New London outlasted Waupaca 5-3 in 11 innings on Monday, working out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the bottom of the seventh, and then held off Kaukauna 6-5 on Tuesday. The Rebels also won three games in the final week, culminating with a 9-1 victory over Green Bay Southwest on Wednesday. Tyler Heegaman went two-for-two with a pair of doubles to lead the Rebels in the victory. Appleton split a doubleheader with Sheboygan on Monday and beat Manitowoc on Tuesday. The Rebels did participate in the league playoffs in 2002 as a wild-card team when the league had a three-division format. |
