De Pere Captures Fourth League Title in Seven Years
2005 League Playoff Information De Pere captured its fifth Fox River Valley American Legion League championship, including its fourth in the past seven years by defeating the Appleton Rebels 6-3 in the title game on July 25 in De Pere. De Pere won three straight championships from 1999-2001 and also shared the title with the Rebels in 1995. Appleton made its first title game appearance since winning the crown in 1998. The game was also a rematch of last year's Class AAA state championship game won by De Pere. Brett Yost tossed a complete game, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out three to earn the victory. After the Rebels scored a run in the first inning, De Pere tied the game in the second on a squeeze bunt by Kyle Kopitzke and then took the lead with two runs in the third as Alex Byrne delivered a run-scoring single and Michael Brunette lofted a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Jeff Riddle added a two-run single in the fifth for a 5-1 lead and also contributed several diving defensive stops at second base to keep the Rebels off the board. Byrne stole home on a double steal for a 6-1 lead later in the inning. Appleton countered with a run in the sixth and had the bases loaded when Yost recorded a strikeout to end the threat. Sam Petrasko tripled and scored on a groundout for the Rebels in the seventh. |
