De Pere and Bay Port Capture JV State Championships
The Fox River Valley American Legion League
swept the junior varsity state championships as De Pere won the
17-and-under title and Bay Port clinched the 16-and-under crown on Aug. 2.
De Pere won its second title in three years by beating
the same opponent at the same location with a 4-3 triumph over Eau Claire
in Marinette. De Pere, which finished runner-up in the Fox River Valley
North Division at the varsity level this season, scored two runs in the
top of the seventh to pull out the win and finish 5-0 in the tournament
and 28-8 overall.
Joe Young hit a sacrifice fly to score Evan Turriff to
tie the game and Tom Tollefson followed with a two-out, run-scoring single
to drive in Gavin Scray with the go-ahead run. Brandon Byrne retired the
side in order in the bottom of the seventh to finish off a complete game
six-hitter. Tollefson was two-for-four and Scray was two-for-three, while
Turriff walked three times and scored each time.
Bay Port's Chris Wakefield pitched a complete game
three-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts in a 9-0 win over host Wisconsin
Rapids. Wakefield and Jerrod Jossart were both two-for-three at the plate
with a double. Bay Port avenged a loss to Wisconsin Rapids from Monday
night and finished 33-5 overall. It was Bay Port's first junior varsity
state championship.
Neenah fell one game short of the title game, losing to
Wisconsin Rapids 8-5 earlier on Tuesday. The game was tied 3-3 before
Wisconsin Rapids struck for five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
