2005 League Playoff Information

     A rematch of last year's Class AAA state championship game is set for Monday as De Pere hosts the Appleton Rebels for the Fox River Valley League title at 5:30 p.m. at Mel Nicks Field. De Pere advanced with a 4-2 win over Pulaski and the Rebels topped New London 12-3 in conference championship games on Friday, July 22.

     De Pere won last year's state title game 11-1 in Eau Claire and is looking for its fourth league title in seven years, having also won three straight from 1999-2001. The Appleton Rebels are making their first title game appearance since winning the crown in 1998. This year's matchup is a rematch of the 1995 league title game that was actually never played after being rained out three different times. The two teams eventually shared the title that season.

     De Pere avenged a nine-inning loss to Pulaski in last year's conference final and jumped out to a 4-0 lead by scoring two runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth on a two-run double by Michael Brunette. Pulaski added a run in the sixth and had a late, two-out rally fall short in the seventh. Cole Ludlow had a run-scoring single and was the tying run at first base, but Kevin Hoeksema recorded a strikeout to earn a save in relief of Erik Olson.

     The Rebels broke open a tight game in the sixth as Boe Baitinger had a run-scoring double for a 4-3 lead and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Sam Petrasko for a 5-3 advantage. Appleton added seven runs in the seventh for the final margin. Baitinger and Petrasko both finished three-for-five, while winning pitcher Tyler Heegaman was three-for-four and hit a solo home run in the seventh. New London was making its first-ever conference title game appearance.
