Frost Takes Two Trophies to Lead Seven Individual League Award
Winners
Pulaski's Adam Frost became the fourth
Fox River Valley American Legion League player since 1990 to capture his
division's individual hitting and pitching awards as seven league players
earned league statistical honors.
Frost was the first player to win both awards in the
same year since Rob Erickson of Marinette in 1998. Dave Gassner of
Hortonville and Adam Peterson of Oconto Falls also accomplished the feat
the preceding year.
The hitting award is determined by the highest batting
average based on two at-bats per game, while the
pitching award is determined by a formula
that ranks each league pitcher that threw 1.5 innings per game in innings,
winning percentage, hits per inning, walks per inning and strikeouts per
inning.
Frost had one of the highest single-season averages in
league history at .600 with division-leading numbers of nine doubles, 16
RBI's and 22 runs scored to become Pulaski's first batting champion since
Andy Karcz in 1997. On the mound, he was 4-2 with 41 strikeouts and just
eight walks in 38 innings.
The East Division had two teams claim awards for the
first time in several years. De Pere's Adam Pasono hit .522 with 22
runs scored for his team's first batting award since Matt Nuthals in 1998.
Casey Mumper gave Kewaunee County its first award winner since Greg
Shepard in 1992 by winning the pitching award with a 5-1 record and 35
strikeouts and just seven walks in 39 innings.
Two South Division players also gave their teams their
first awards in a lengthy span. Jon Gulbranson claimed the Appleton
Rebels' first batting trophy since Peter Azzi in 1995 by hitting .563 with
four home runs and 15 RBI's. Scott Neubauer earned Green Bay
Southwest's first pitching award since league records have been kept in
1990 by striking out 32 batters in 36 innings.
Menasha's Brandon Birling won a tight race for
the West Division batting title, hitting .467 with seven RBI's and
Waupaca's Braden Kaminske claimed the pitching award with a
league-high 73 strikeouts and three shutouts. It was the second individual
winner in three years for both teams.
The awards will be presented at the annual league
banquet on August 21 at 6 p.m. at the Darboy Club,
immediately following the all-star game in Kimberly.
Tickets are available at the door.
