Hortonville Achieves League Title in Dramatic Fashion Box Score
Dan
Immel’s run-scoring single with two outs and two strikes in the bottom
of the seventh inning lifted Hortonville to its first Fox River Valley
American Legion League title since 1997 with a 3-2 victory over Pulaski on
July 26 in Hortonville.
Immel
lined a 2-2 pitch up the middle with the bases loaded to score Mike
Bunkleman with the winning run as Hortonville won in its fourth
championship game appearance in eight years. Hortonville was runner-up in
1999 and 2003, while Pulaski made its first finals appearance in league
records dating to 1991.
Immel’s
game-winning hit gave Hortonville its first lead of the game as it battled
from one-run deficits to tie the game in the third and fourth innings.
Pulaski’s
Mike Davis scored on a two-out wild pitch in the second inning before
Hortonville tied the game in the third when Bunkleman scored on a throwing
error. Loren Miller laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to score Joe Alger in
the fourth and put Pulaski back ahead, but winning pitcher Kris Gutknecht
opened the bottom of the inning with a home run to leftfield to tie the
game.
Gutknecht
and Pulaski pitcher Brent Belaire each allowed only four hits for the game
and worked into the seventh where both encountered jams. In the top of the
inning, Rob VandenLangenberg walked for Pulaski and moved to second on a
wild pitch. Miller bunted for a single to push VandenLangenberg to third,
but Miller was thrown out stealing on the next pitch. Cole Ludlow then
popped up a suicide squeeze bunt to Gutknecht and VandenLangenberg was an
easy double play out at third to end the threat.
Bunkleman
opened Hortonville’s winning rally with one-out double down the right
field line and moved to third when Dave Meltz’ sacrifice bunt was
misplayed. Meltz stole second and Kevin Foley was intentionally walked to
load the bases with one out. Belaire then struck out Joe Sambs for the
second out before Immel’s game-winner.
Hortonville ends the regular season with a
19-4 record, while Pulaski fell to 20-9. |
