Hortonville Defends National Conference Title; Pulaski Takes American
Crown Green Bay Southwest vs.
Hortonville Box Score
Pulaski vs. De Pere Box Score
Hortonville won its second straight National Conference title with a 12-4
victory over Green Bay Southwest, while Pulaski won its first American
Conference crown by outlasting De Pere 7-5 in nine innings in the Fox
River Valley American Legion League playoffs on July 23.
The two squads will play for the league
championship on Monday, July 26 at 5:30 p.m. at Commercial Club Park in
Hortonville.
Hortonville advanced to finals behind Andy Anderson, who was the winning pitcher, finished
three-for-three and scored the go-ahead run in a five-run fourth inning.
After Green Bay Southwest scored two runs in the
top of the first inning, Hortonville rallied with a run-scoring single by
Mike Bunkleman in the third and a game-tying fielders' choice by Luke
Seavecki in the fourth. With the game tied 2-2 and the bases loaded with
one out, Anderson scored on a passed ball on a close play at the plate.
Following a strikeout, Kris Gutknecht ripped a two-run single for a 5-2
lead. Kevin Foley was two-for-four and added a two-run single in a six-run
sixth inning.
Southwest had 10 hits and six walks off Anderson,
but hit into three double plays, had three runners thrown out at the
plate, a runner caught stealing and a runner picked off.
Pulaski scored its winning runs in the top of the
ninth after two outs and nobody on base. Rob VandenLangenberg and Loren
Miller had consecutive singles and moved up to second and third on a
passed ball and a stolen base, respectively. Blair Basten singled home
VandenLangenberg and Miller scored on an error to give Pulaski the lead.
De Pere had runners at first and third with two outs in the bottom of the
inning, but Miller threw a runner out stealing to end the game.
De Pere's Kyle Kopitzke was three-for-five and
hit a two-run single in the third for a 4-3 lead. Pulaski tied the game in
the sixth on a solo home run by Joe Alger. Brent Belaire drove in three
runs for the victors and Kurt Albers was three-for-four for De Pere. Mike
Davis allowed one run over seven innings of relief to earn the victory.
Hortonville will make its fourth title game
appearance in its 13 years as a league member and will host the finals for
the first time. It won the championship in 1997 and was runner-up in 1999
and 2003. Pulaski is making its first playoff appearance in league records
dating to 1991. |
