Eight Players Land Fox River Valley League Hitting and Pitching Awards

Three players became their team's first-ever Fox River Valley American Legion League individual award winners as eight players were honored for their achievements in the 2004 season.
Both East Division winners came from first-time teams as Jacob Junion of Northern Door took the batting award in dramatic fashion, collecting two hits in extra innings of the final game of the season to finish at .489 and win by two points. Among his 22 hits were 10 for extra bases. Lawton Pieschek of Denmark won the pitching award with 29 strikeouts and six walks in 32 2/3 innings pitched.
New London also had its first award winner as Dave Palmer won the West Division batting title with a .568 average. Palmer had at least two hits in 10 of his 12 league games. Kimberly's Bill Dictus won a closely-contested pitching award, allowing just 17 hits and 13 walks in 32 2/3 innings.
The only repeat winner was Sheboygan's Grant Berkovitz, who became the first South Division player to win consecutive hitting awards and the first player to repeat in any division since Hortonville's Dave Gassner in 1996-97. Berkovitz hit .512 to easily win by 73 points and become the sixth Sheboygan hitting award winner over the past 11 years. Nick Miller of Appleton Legion won the South Division pitching award with 22 strikeouts and just three walks in 26 innings pitched.
The North Division saw two teams claim their first individual winners in several years. Eric Coenen became Seymour's first-ever batting award winner and first overall award winner since Eric VanDeHei won the pitching award in 1995. Coenen hit .462 and went 11-for-20 over the final five games to win the award by three points. Eric Boye is Menominee's first pitching award winner and second award winner overall, joining Trevor Thomas, who won the batting award in 1999. Boye had 36 strikeouts and 14 walks in 34 innings while winning three of Menominee's five victories.
The awards will be presented at the annual league banquet on August 22 at 6 p.m. at the Darboy Club, immediately following the all-star game in Kimberly. Tickets are available at the door.
