Shawano Beats Hortonville to Claim Second Straight Fox River
Valley League Title
Box Score
Four pitchers combined on a three-hitter as Shawano rolled to its
second straight Fox River Valley American Legion League title with a 6-1
championship game victory over Hortonville on July 29 in Shawano.
Shawano
scored three runs in both the third and sixth innings while holding
Hortonville to just one hit after the first inning for the victory.
Shawano has now won two league titles in just five years as a league
member. Hortonville made its third title game appearance, having won in
1997 and finished runner-up in 1999.
Shawano’s
Nick Raddant, Josh Ebert and Brandon Emmel all worked two innings and
Brett Nelson pitched the seventh. Ebert picked up the victory, retiring
all six batters faced in the third and fourth innings.
Shawano
broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when Jeff Blumreich led
off the inning with a walk, was bunted to second by Emmel, advanced to
third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. Emmel later scored on
an error off a ball hit by Brett Nelson, who came around on a run-scoring
double by Levi O’Kimosh.
Mike
Rickert, Nelson and O’Kimosh all had run-scoring singles after two outs
in the sixth as all three players finished with two hits.
Hortonville
scored its lone run in the fifth when Kris Gutknecht walked and scored on
Dan Immel’s single. Immel’s hit was Hortonville’s only safety after
the first inning. Dan Collar took the loss, but struck out seven batters
in five innings.
Shawano,
also the defending Class AA state champion, can sweep both league and
state titles for the second straight year when it takes part in this
weekend’s state tournament in Kaukauna. Shawano is now 28-5, while
Hortonville concludes its season at 20-10.
