Hortonville Slugs Its Way to
West Division Championship
Hortonville joined De Pere as the second team to
clinch a division crown this season by taking the West Division title with
a 14-3 win over Winneconne on
July 17. Hortonville also sealed home field advantage for the National
Conference championship game on July 22.
Thursday's game marked the 10th time in 14 league
games that Hortonville scored nine or more runs. The squad finished with
152 runs scored in league play this season for an average of 10.9 per game
and also hit .341 as a team.
Tony Bunkleman, Dan Immel, Brandon Netzer and
Andy Anderson all had two hits and drove in at least two runs in the five
inning title-clinching win over Winneconne. Dan Collar allowed four hits
and struck out nine batters over four innings to pick up the victory.
Hortonville, which also won division titles in
1997 and 1999, finished .500 or better in league play for the fifth
straight year.
Hortonville will host the National Conference
championship at 5:30 p.m. on July 22 at Commercial Club Park. It will face
the South Division champion, which will be either Sheboygan or the
Appleton Rebels. Sheboygan needs one victory over the Green Bay Shockers
in a doubleheader on Sat., July 19 to clinch its first-ever division
title. If the Shockers win both games, the Appleton Rebels will claim the
South Division crown. |
