De Pere Leaves Little
Suspense in East Division Title Chase
De Pere left little suspense in
the East Division title chase, claiming its fourth division crown in five
years and a berth in the league playoffs by beating Bay Port 6-5 on July 8
in De Pere.
Alex Byrne pitched an inning and two-thirds of
scoreless relief of winning pitcher Kevin Albers to preserve the victory
after De Pere had jumped out to a 5-0 lead.
De Pere, now 12-0 in league play and 23-8
overall, will face the North Division champion in the American Conference
title game on July 22. The game will be hosted by the team with the better
record, meaning De Pere can clinch home field with victories in its final
two games at Denmark on July 9 and at Sturgeon Bay on July 15. Denmark and
Sturgeon Bay both have three losses and cannot catch De Pere in the
standings.
De Pere scored four runs in the third inning as
Nick Instefjord scored on an error and Adam Pasono scored on a run-scoring
single by Rick Berken. Nic Spaeth and Berken both came around to score on
a squeeze bunt by Jordan Stauber later in the inning.
Spaeth drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth for
a 5-0 lead and Matt Kolb plated the eventual winning run with an RBI
groundout in the fifth.
Bay Port's Jason Meyer and Brian Ryczkowski were
both three-for-four. Bay Port had hits to lead off each of the first six
innings before Byrne retired the first two batters in the seventh. He
allowed a single to Ryczkowski before recording the final out for the
save. |
