Hortonville and Shawano to
Meet for Fox River Valley League Championship
Hortonville and Shawano will square off for the Fox River Valley American
Legion League championship after posting conference title game victories
on Tuesday, July 22. Hortonville blanked Sheboygan 2-0, while Shawano
topped De Pere 5-3 to reach the title game, which will be played Tuesday,
July 29 at Shawano at 7:30 p.m.
Kris Gutknecht and Brandon Netzer combined on a
three-hit shutout to lead Hortonville in its National Conference title
game victory. In fact, Hortonville managed just two hits itself, but both
led to runs as it also took advantage of three Sheboygan errors.
In the third inning, Phil Taylor led off with a
walk and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw by Sheboygan pitcher
Derrick Magee. Gutknecht then hit a soft liner into rightfield and Taylor
beat the throw home for a 1-0 lead. Hortonville added another run in the
fifth when Jake Butler led off with a walk and moved to third after a bunt
single by Tony Bunkelman and a throwing error by Magee. Pinch runner Andy
Anderson scored when Magee faked a pickoff throw to first for a balk.
Gutknecht walked none and struck out three for the
victory. Netzer retired all six batters faced to record the save. The duo
did not allow a Sheboygan runner to reach third base.
At De Pere, Shawano erased a two-run deficit with
a four-run fourth inning and then put the ball in the hands of closer Mike
Rickert, who allowed just three hits and struck out eight in four innings
to earn the victory. The matchup featured the top ranked teams in the
latest Class AAA and Class AA state rankings.
De Pere, which is atop the Class AAA rankings for
the first time this year, scored two runs in the first inning without a
hit as Adam Pasono was hit by a pitch and scored on a groundout by Nick
Instefjord before Nic Spaeth walked and later scored on a wild pitch.
Rickert singled home Shawano's first run
in the fourth and Brett Nelson tied the game with a run-scoring double.
Levi O'Kimosh put Shawano ahead with a sacrifice fly and Craig Rose drove
home another run with a double. De Pere loaded the bases with nobody out
in the bottom of the inning against O'Kimosh, Shawano's starting pitcher,
however, Rickert came in and recorded a strikeout before allowing a
run-scoring single to Instefjord. He then forced a double play on a
botched squeeze bunt play to end the inning.
Shawano is the defending league champion and
advances to its second league title game. Hortonville is making its third
title game appearance in seven years, having finished runner-up in 1999
and won in 1997. Click Here for
