Eight Players Land Fox River Valley League Hitting and Pitching
Awards
Eight players representing seven different
teams have been honored as Fox River Valley American Legion League hitting
and pitching award winners for the 2003 season.
South Division champion Sheboygan was the only
division champion to win an individual award and the only squad with two
winners as Grant Berkovitz captured the batting title and Mike
Rauwerdink collected the pitching award. Berkovitz hit .511 and
finished the season with nine hits in his final 11 at bats to become the
fifth Sheboygan player since 1994 to earn the award. Rauwerdink was 5-1
and led the division with 39 strikeouts while walking just eight batters
in 37 innings to become the second straight Sheboygan pitcher to claim the
award after Aaron Sorenson took last year's honor.
Waupaca had its first ever award winner as Zac
Peterson won the West Division pitching award. He led the division
with 36 strikeouts in 27.2 innings pitched and finished 3-0. Menasha's Shane
Mommaerts hit .500 and had hits in five of his last seven at bats to
pull away for the West Division batting award. He drove in 18 runs and had
a division-leading four home runs.
In the East Division, Bay Port's Ben Warwick
seized the batting award with a league-high .543 average. Sturgeon Bay's Adam
Bretl won the pitching award while posting a division-high 33
strikeouts with nine walks in 25.2 innings. Bretl is the fifth Sturgeon
Bay pitcher to win the award since 1994.
Marinette had its first award winner since 1998
as Tim Garceau won the North Division batting title and Pulaski
took home its first award since 1997 as Brent Belaire claimed the
North Division pitching award. Garceau hit .450 and belted four home runs
with a division-high 18 runs scored. Belaire was 4-1 with a
division-leading 47 strikeouts and just seven walks in 28 innings.
The batting award is given to the player with the
highest league batting average based on two at-bats per game. The pitching
award is based on a formula that combines innings pitched, winning
percentage, hits allowed per inning, walks per inning and strikeouts per
inning. All pitchers who throw at least 1.5 innings per game qualify and
are then ranked in each category to determine a point total.
The awards will be presented at the annual league banquet on August 17 at 6 p.m. at the Darboy Club,
immediately following the all-star game in Kimberly.
Tickets are available at the door.
