Seven Players Honored With League Batting and Pitching Awards
Seven players have been honored as the 2002 Fox River Valley Legion Baseball League's
batting and pitching award winners.
The South Division batting race finished in a tie for
the second time in four years as Corey Richardson of Appleton
Legion and Bryan Schwebke of Oshkosh both finished at .441
(26-for-59). Richardson drove in 19 runs, while Schwebke had 25 RBI's and
hits in all but two games.
Nate Ejnik gave league champion Shawano its
first-ever award winner by claiming the North Division batting crown with
a .465 average. Ejnik was a solid leadoff hitter, pounding out 28 singles
among his 33 hits and scoring 23 runs.
Winneconne also had its first-ever award winner as Tyler
Haddock won the batting title and captured the West Division's triple
crown, leading the division in average at .488, RBI's with 23 and home
runs with four. Haddock had a hit in all 12 games played and drove in
eight runs in a season-ending win over Kaukauna.
De Pere's Jason Berken won his second
straight North Division pitching title, posting a 6-1 record with 92
strikeouts and 17 walks. Berken had a streak of 26 straight scoreless
innings in league play this season.
Aaron Sorenson became the first Sheboygan
player ever to win a league pitching award by taking the South Division
trophy. Sorenson was 3-2 with 42 strikeouts and just seven walks. He
shutout both Appleton Legion and the Green Bay Shockers.
Kaukauna had its first award winner in the past
13 seasons as Phil Zander won the West Division pitching award.
Zander completed all eight starts and finished 4-4 with 68 strikeouts and
18 walks.
The batting award is given to the player with the
highest league batting average based on two at-bats per game. The pitching award is based on a formula that
combines innings pitched, winning percentage, hits allowed per inning,
walks per inning and strikeouts per inning. All pitchers who throw at
least 1.5 innings per game qualify and are then ranked in each category to
determine a point total.
